Short-term Accommodation

¡Bienvenido a Madrid! Finding the right accommodation can be a bit challenging, but with some guidance, you'll navigate the process smoothly. Here are some tips to help you find the perfect short-term lease:

Start Early: Begin your search well in advance to have a broader range of options. Madrid is a bustling city, and good accommodations tend to get booked quickly, especially during peak seasons.

Use Online Platforms: Websites like Idealista, Fotocasa, and Spotahome are great resources for finding short-term rentals. Don't discard websites such as Airbnb.com and Booking.com, real estate agencies in Madrid have lots of hidden charges, such as one month deposit, one or two month leasing fees even for short term rentals. Do the proper math so you don't have surprises and make sure to ask for a list of all the fees well in advance.

Consider University Housing: Many universities in Madrid offer accommodation services for international students. Check with your university to see if they have partnerships with local housing providers or if they are part of the intergenerational coexistence program (CONVIVE) they can assist you in finding a suitable place. Even if your study program doesn´t has a partnership, many university dorms might have spare rooms particularly after January and they will be willing to lease them for a few months as they need to fill in their capacity.

Explore Different Neighbourhoods: Madrid is diverse, and each neighbourhood has its own charm. Consider your priorities, such as proximity to your university, access to public transportation, and the kind of atmosphere you prefer. Malasaña, Lavapiés, and Salamanca are popular among students but also expensive. Look outside the M-30, you might be surprised as how prices can drop and you can get more for your money.

Join Online Communities: Platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp have groups dedicated to housing in Madrid. Join these communities to get firsthand advice from other students, find potential roommates, or discover hidden gems in the rental market.

Be Wary of Scams: Unfortunately, scams can happen more often than we would like. Always verify the legitimacy of the landlord or agency. Never pay significant amounts upfront without proper documentation, and if something feels off, trust your instincts and look for alternatives.

Language Assistance: If you're not fluent in Spanish, consider asking a local friend or using translation tools during communication. It's crucial to understand the terms of your lease, so don't hesitate to seek language support.

Negotiate and Clarify Terms: Don't be afraid to negotiate terms, especially if you're dealing directly with a landlord. Ensure that you understand all aspects of the lease agreement, including costs, duration, and any additional fees.

Check Reviews: If possible, look for reviews or testimonials from previous tenants. This can give you valuable insights into the condition of the property and the landlord's reliability.

Visit Before Committing: If your schedule allows, try to visit potential accommodations before committing. This way, you can get a feel for the neighbourhood and ensure that the place meets your expectations.

Remember, finding the right accommodation is part of the adventure. Enjoy your time in Madrid, and don't hesitate to reach out if you need further assistance. ¡Buena suerte!
